Longevity

Prevention of disease is the foundation to living longer and healthier. Unfortunately, our healthcare system is mostly set up to help you live longer by ‘managing’ chronic illnesses after the fact. This reactive approach is less than ideal. Instead, our efforts should be to delay the onset of chronic disease through prevention and health optimization. Beyond the reactive nature of our healthcare system we also do a poor job of appropriately assessing long term risk.

If we only focus on preventing disease we will live longer, however, we can further improve our quality of live and health by improving function and our mental wellbeing. Our sleep, stress management, strength, mobility & aerobic capacity are a few of the important components that our healthcare system overlooks, yet they are important for us to maintain health and functionality as we age.

We work to prevent the major chronic diseases:

  • The most common cause of death in the US is heart disease (a subset of cardiovascular disease). In the US we do a bad job of assessing cardiovascular risk (risk of heart attack or stroke). Most doctor use LDL-C (Low Density Lipoprotein Concentration) to assess the burden of lipoproteins (cholesterol) in the blood. They then combine this with age, smoking status, blood pressure and whether you are diabetic or not to figure out you individuals risk. However, there is a large body of data demonstrating that LDL-C is inferior to other cholesterol measures & biomarkers when it comes to determining cardiovascular risk. Thus, we are likely mischaracterizing the cardiovascular disease risk of many people.

The two most important biomarkers with respect to cardiovascular risk are ApoB and Lp(a). At Summit we check these two biomarkers on all patients and offer additional, more in depth test to help us get a comprehensive understanding of your risk.
